![]() Sometimes, the tiles have a metal pin (called a spinner or pivot) in the middle. Such sets are lightweight, compact, and inexpensive, and like cards are more susceptible to minor disturbances such as a sudden breeze. Occasionally, one may find a domino set made of card stock like that for playing cards. Modern sets also commonly use a different color for the dots of each different end value (one-spots might have black pips while two-spots might be green, three red, etc.) to facilitate finding matching ends. Modern commercial domino sets are usually made of synthetic materials, such as ABS or polystyrene plastics, or Bakelite and other phenolic resins many sets approximate the look and feel of ivory while others use colored or even translucent plastics to achieve a more contemporary look. These sets have a more novel look, and the often heavier weight makes them feel more substantial also, such materials and the resulting products are usually much more expensive than polymer materials. Alternatively, domino sets have been made from many different natural materials: stone (e.g., marble, granite or soapstone) other woods (e.g., ash, oak, redwood, and cedar) metals (e.g., brass or pewter) ceramic clay, or even frosted glass or crystal. Some sets feature the top half thickness in MOP, ivory, or bone, with the lower half in ebony. ![]() Construction and composition of domino sets Įuropean-style dominoes are traditionally made of bone, silver lip ocean pearl oyster shell (mother of pearl), ivory, or a dark hardwood such as ebony, with contrasting black or white pips ( inlaid or painted). : 181–182 In Britain, the most popular league and pub game is Fives and Threes.ĭominoes have sometimes been used for divination, such as bone throwing in Chinese culture and in the African diaspora. Other popular forms include Texas 42, Chicken Foot, Concentration, Double Fives, and Mexican Train. The most commonly played domino games are Domino Whist, Matador, and Muggins (All Fives). Despite the coinage of the word " polyomino" as a generalization, there is no connection between the word "domino" and the number 2 in any language. The name "domino" is probably derived from the resemblance to a kind of carnival costume worn during the Venetian Carnival, often consisting of a black-hooded robe and a white mask. European dominoes may have developed independently, or Italian missionaries in China may have brought the game to Europe. Modern dominoes first appeared in Italy during the 18th century, but they differ from Chinese dominoes in a number of respects, and there is no confirmed link between the two. The earliest mention of dominoes is from Song dynasty China found in the text Former Events in Wulin by Zhou Mi (1232–1298). ![]() Another form of entertainment using domino pieces is the practice of domino toppling.Ī boxed domino set dating from the late 19th or early 20th century A domino set is a generic gaming device, similar to playing cards or dice, in that a variety of games can be played with a set. The traditional European domino set consists of 28 tiles, also known as pieces, bones, rocks, stones, men, cards or just dominoes, featuring all combinations of spot counts between zero and six. The gaming pieces make up a domino set, sometimes called a deck or pack. The backs of the tiles in a set are indistinguishable, either blank or having some common design. Each end is marked with a number of spots (also called pips or dots) or is blank. Each domino is a rectangular tile, usually with a line dividing its face into two square ends. ![]() ![]() There’s definitely a lot of rough edges to what Musk has been doing so far at Twitter. By doing this deal and having the media attention on Twitter, all we’re really doing is exposing a lot of that weakness to the public that we just hadn’t noticed or thought about before. They’ve struggled with profitability for many years, and they’ve been quite slow at innovating on new features and growth opportunities. Prior to the acquisition, Twitter as a company was much weaker than most people realize. While it isn’t quite building electric cars or going to Mars, the situation that Musk is stepping into at Twitter is challenging and might call for a leader who is willing to take some risks here rather than remain conservative as Twitter has been for a while. What he’s doing here is consistent with how he operates SpaceX and Tesla and his other businesses. WU: We shouldn’t be surprised by the management style that Musk is taking to Twitter. Some in tech suggest there’s more of a “move fast, break things” strategy to it than perhaps meets the eye. Musk’s stated desire to make Twitter a haven for any speech “within the bounds of the law” has led to a sharp uptick in posts advocating white nationalism, anti-Semitism, homophobia, and right-wing threats of political violence, prompting many users to reconsider whether they will continue using the platform.Ĭritics say all these radical moves are akin to lighting Twitter investors’ money on fire. But others, like the walkout of more than 1,000 additional key infrastructure staff, as well as advertisers, were not. Some changes, like Musk’s firing of 50 percent of the firm’s 7,000 employees, were deliberate. Since Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, purchased Twitter for $44 billion last month, the company has undergone a series of abrupt shifts. ![]() ![]() ![]() It's that characteristic that simplifies construction. If you look carefully at the photo above you'll see that the frame has depth - and the passe-partout appears to be set at the back of the frame. You'll understand the concept better towards the end when I attach the screen to the wall. In my Magic Mirror it is the screen that supports the frame, not the other way around. In my build, I've reversed this situation - making my Mirror much lighter, cheaper and easier. Invariably they have a wooden bar across the back to hold the screen in place. Most builds seem to use a heavy wooden frame to support the substantial weight of the screen. In constructing my Mirror I did something I haven't seen elsewhere. Unfortunately these brands may not be available outside North America. Mirroview - this one seems to be designed specifically for computer screen scenarios. That said, from my research I came to the conclusion that two mirrors from Pilkington are probably the best available: I scoured the internet looking for the definition of the "best ratio of reflectivity/transparency." Most sources say 70% reflective, 30% transparent is ideal. Acrylic is good because it's very light, but from experience, I think it's better for smaller mirrors only. Personally, I used 3mm acrylic and although it looks great, I'd prefer to replace it with glass that eliminates distortion. See here for discussions about acquiring in different places. It can be difficult to get in many countries. The glass/acrylic for the mirror is about the hardest component to get right. Screen wall mount - usually called a "VESA" mount and you'll need one for your specific screen.Extension power cable - you'll probably cut the power cable from your screen and splice it to another cable. It's ideal because you can find it anywhere, it's strong and it doesn't stretch. Strapping band - I found the single meter I needed wrapped around a box of printer paper.IKEA's RIBBA frame (No.: 200.780.50.) I specifically suggest this frame because of a certain characteristic that simplifies construction of the mirror. You'll also need a video cable (and probably a converter to HDMI) and power cable.
